It’s the last day of the year and we hope these numbers don’t change, but according to Pennsylvania’s Uniform Crime Reporting System, the most serious crimes were down 71 percent in Indiana County in 2021, when compared to 2020.
There have been 420 offenses reported by the county’s crime enforcement agencies this year, compared to 1,466 last year.
There have been no murders or negligent manslaughters reported, seven rapes (compared to 38 a year ago), and eleven aggravated assaults (compared to 61 in 2020).
The two crimes most reported this year have been larceny (180) and simple assault (174). But those are way off from last year, too. There were 645 larcenies and 570 simple assaults in 2020.
Of the 11 reportable categories of crime, 2021 has seen an increase in only one: arson, which is up from 14 last year to 22 this year.
The statistics could change –and could change dramatically – if some agencies have delayed their reports until they compile them after year’s end.
