There are two picks from the 2011 NFL Draft still playing with their original teams. Both are defensive linemen named Cam, and both are multiple-time All-Pros. One is New Orleans defensive end Cam Johnson. The other is the Steelers’ Cam Heyward, who has signed his fourth contract, a three-year deal with the Steelers, a rare accomplishment that he says he is happy to get done and put to rest, because he has a season opener coming up on Sunday at Atlanta.
Heyward says it’s time to focus on the game, but he’ll always be thankful for the guys who helped him play this long.
Heyward says preparing for a season opener is always different from other games.
At practice yesterday, guard Isaac Seumalo and rookie defensive lineman Logan Lee sat out with injuries. Running back Jaylen Warren, defensive back Corey Trice Jr., and rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson were all limited.
Newly-signed running back Boston Scott was placed on the practice squad injured reserve list yesterday. The Steelers signed former Harvard running back Aaron Shampklin to replace him. Shampklin was with them in training camp.
