A measure of how good Chartiers Valley’s girls basketball team is: The top-ranked WPIAL 5A team beat the highly-rated Indiana girls yesterday afternoon at the Latrobe tournament, 72-40, and then turned up last night 60 miles away and beat the top-ranked 3A team, North Catholic, 63-52.
For the Indiana girls, Mia Ciocca scored 11 points and Bella Antonacci had 10. Indiana will play McLean High School, out of Virginia, at Latrobe today.
NORTH STAR TOURNAMENT
The United teams swept the championships of the North Star Tournament last night. The girls beat Somerset, 60-36, as Lauren Donelson dropped in 21 points and Mollee Frye added 14. Delaney Perone scored 11 points for the Lions. Frye was named the tournament MVP and Donelson made the all-tournament team.
The United boys hammered North Star, 60-34. Johnny Muchesko led the way with 17 points. Jon Henry scored 15 and Ben Tomb had 11.
APOLLO RIDGE TOURNAMENT
River Valley’s girls beat host and defending champ Apollo Ridge, 67-36 to win the Apollo Ridge Tournament. Freshman Ava Persichetti was named the tournament MVP. She scored 23 points with five assists and five steals. Julia Potts scored 13 points and made the all-tournament team. Hannah Artly also made the all-tournament team, with seven points. Apollo ridge’s Sophia Yard scored 22 of her team’s 36 points.
River Valley is 8-1 and will play at Latrobe on Tuesday and against Richland next Friday night.
HERITAGE CONFERENCE
Heritage Conference rivals Purchase Line and Northern Cambria met last night, and the Red Dragons came away with a 75-22 win. Five Purchase Line players scored in double figures, led by Abby Goss and Jianna Hopkins with 14 each, Madison Scalese with 11, and Bethany Smith and Anna Layden, each with 10.
