After leading his team to the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Football Championship, IUP quarterback Lenny Williams, Jr. has been named the Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week, which was announced on Monday morning by the league.
The game’s MVP, Williams finished 15-of-20 passing for 212 yards and three touchdowns in the 24-7 IUP victory at West Chester on Saturday. Williams, a redshirt junior, also ran eight times for 36 yards, including three carries that resulted in first downs.
All three of his touchdown passes came in the first half, as the Crimson Hawks got out to a fast start and took a 21-7 lead into halftime.
His first touchdown came on the opening drive of the game, finding redshirt sophomore receiver Dom McNeil with a 15-yard strike over the middle. His next pass was a 52-yard bomb down the middle of the field to graduate receiver Chris Wuestner, finding Wuestner again two plays later for a 7-yard touchdown to give IUP a 14-0 lead with four minutes to play in the opening quarter.
His third touchdown pass was another big play, as redshirt sophomore Kolbe Hughes caught a short pass and weaved through the West Chester defense and down the sideline for a 40-yard touchdown late in the half.
With his performance, Williams moved into second place all-time at IUP with 7,856 total yards and 73 total touchdowns. He also slid up the passing charts and into sixth place in program history with 5,747 passing yards.
This is Williams’ second PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Week award this season and the fourth of his career.
Williams, Crimson Hawks clinch home field throughout Super Region One
The win not only gave IUP its fourth ever PSAC title, but also helped wrap up the No. 1 seed in Super Region One and home field advantage throughout the bracket as the NCAA Division II Championships start this week. IUP’s first game will be on Saturday, Nov. 25 at home.
