Mitch Keller’s late-season troubles continued yesterday as the Pirates dropped another game to Cleveland. Joe Block has the story.
Before the game, the Pirates activated relievers Ryan Borucki and Colin Holderman, bringing them up from Indianapolis as their two September callups. Borucki threw an inning yesterday and gave up two earned runs. He’d been out since April 7th, the day after the Pirates’ home opener, with left triceps inflammation. He’d made only four appearances before his injury. Holderman had made 44 appearances before injuring his right wrist and being placed on the injury list on August 8th.
On The Ben Cherington Show on WCCS yesterday, the Pirates’ GM talked about the move of Oneil Cruz from shortstop to center field, and while it’s too early to tell yet how the move will go, Cruz’s willingness to learn is evident. Cherington was impressed with Cruz’s approach to his new position.
The Pirates lost three times to the Cubs last week and they are at Wrigley Field tonight to open a three-game series with the Cubs. Jared Jones (5-7, 3.88 ERA) gets his second start since his return from the injury list. Against the Cubs last Tuesday, he gave up five earned runs in four innings. He’ll be opposed by former Pirate Jameson Taillon (9-8, 3.85 ERA), who got the win against the Pirates last Monday, going six-and-two-thirds innings and surrendering four earned runs.
Airtime tonight is 7:15, with first pitch at 7:40 on WCCS.
