State police say that the Christmas driving period saw an increase in crashes and fatalities across the state from 2019.
In a news release, state police said that they investigated 488 total crashes between December 24th and 26th. Four fatal crashes were reported. Six people were killed and there were 90 people injured over the three-day holiday weekend. 41 of the crashes were alcohol related and one of the fatal crashes was alcohol related. Police also reported 181 DUI arrests. Each category saw an increase over the statistics reported in 2019.
Police also reported 1,131 speeding citations, 124 seat belt citations, 24 child safety seat citations, and 2,728 other citations.
State Police Troop A, which covers most of Indiana and Westmoreland counties along with all of Cambria and Somerset counties, reported 22 crashes over Christmas weekend. While there were no fatal crashes reported, seven people were injured and three of the crashes were alcohol-related. 10 DUI arrests were made, 74 speeding tickets were issued. 15 seatbelt citations were issued, no child safety seat citations were issued, and 150 other citations were issued.
No stats were reported across the state in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
State police also remind everyone that troopers will be out in force for the New Year’s weekend as well, and they also say that if your celebrations include drinking, designate a driver, call a taxi or use a shared-ride service. Police will be looking out for impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers over the holiday weekend.
