As most fans expected, Mike Tomlin officially named Russell Wilson as the Steelers’ starting quarterback for their season opener against Atlanta on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old was the overall favorite to win the starting job against Justin Fields, who was acquired from Chicago in the offseason. He completed 10 passes on 12 attempts for 73 yards in two preseason games, but Wilson has yet to play more than two drives in a Steelers uniform. Fields will be the backup and Kyle Allen the third stringer.
With the quarterback controversy out of the way, Tomlin might have to continue bolstering the offensive line. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports guard Isaac Seumalo left practice on Tuesday with a pectoral injury, however, initial tests showed he will not have to undergo season-ending surgery. Seumalo will receive additional testing to see how severe his injury is and he could miss a few weeks of the regular season.
The Steelers also added a Brandon to their wide receiver corps… but it’s not the Brandon fans were hoping for. They signed former Broncos wideout Brandon Johnson to their practice squad after he posted 105 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.
