Pirates starters have thrown nineteen-plus innings of scoreless baseball in the last three games. Last night it was Paul Skenes throwing zeroes. Joe Block recaps the Pirates’ win over the Reds.
Skenes has scuffled in his most recent starts, but manager Derek Shelton says last night he was dominant, thanks to a power fastball.
Skenes says the adjustment from college to the longer season of pro baseball isn’t easy, and he appreciates how the Pirates managed his start to his pro career, which many thought progressed too slowly.
Game two of the four-game series is tonight at PNC Park. Southpaw Bailey Falter (6-7, 4.02 ERA) takes the ball for the Bucs against Reds lefty Andrew Abbott (10-10, 3.72 ERA). Because of high school football, the game will not air on WCCS.
Not such a good night for some rehabbing Pirates pitchers playing for Indianapolis in a 9-8, 10-inning win at Columbus last night. Ryan Borucki and Colin Holderman each gave up a run in one inning stints and Carmen Mlodzinski gave up three in two-thirds of an inning. Second baseman Nick Gonzalez was 1-for-4 with a homer.
Indy shortstop Liover Peguero hit two home runs. Pirates number-one prospect Bubba Chandler gave up three runs in five innings of work.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona lost to Richmond, 7-6 in 11 innings. Dominic Perachi starts for the Curve tonight.
