The Steelers were back at work at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex yesterday to start what coach Mike Tomlin called a “mock week”. They’ll follow the same preparation schedule they would for a regular season with one exception…rather than playing on a Sunday, they’ll play on Saturday afternoon in Detroit. You’ll hear the game on WDAD starting with the kickoff at one o’clock.
Much of the talk yesterday focused on the poor performance of the offensive line last weekend against Buffalo. Tackle Broderick Jones was a target of fans after he struggled against the Bills’ Greg Rousseau. He says he didn’t get the job done.
First round draft pick Troy Fautanu could only watch as his linemates stumbled against the Bills. He is out with a knee injury and won’t play against the Lions this Saturday, but he says he is treating the week as if he would be playing.
Nate Herbig was placed on injured reserve yesterday, likely ending his season after he suffered a torn rotator cuff in practice last week. Rookie Zach Frazier is the new starter after Herbig’s injury. He says it’s an opportunity he’s been preparing for since he was drafted in April.
Veteran cornerback Anthony Averett was released, a sign that second-year corner Corey Trice’s recovery from major knee surgery last year is about complete. The Steelers also signed defensive lineman Marcus Haynes and inside linebacker Kyahva Tezino.
