As school buses roll out for the first time this school year in Indiana County this morning, drivers are asked to keep some things in mind.
School starts today for the River Valley school District and tomorrow for Homer-Center, Indiana, Marion Center, United, Purchase Line and Penns Manor. Drivers are reminded that when a school bus is stopping to pick up or drop off kids, and the red lights flash and the stop arm extends, they must stop at least 10 feet away from the bus, whether behind or in front of it. Matthew Smith of Smith Bus Company also says that at an intersection, everyone has to stop.
If there is a physical barrier, like a concrete or grassy median or guide rails, oncoming traffic may continue.
State Police Public Information Officer Trooper Cliff Greenfield said that there are stiff penalties for breaking school bus-related laws.
Blairsville Police Chief Lou Sacco said that officers will be out on extra duty this morning to enforce bus safety rules.
Drivers are advised to give themselves some extra time this morning and to be mindful of the buses.
