All of the runs came on home runs last night as the Pirates traveled to Arlington, Texas, and it was the Rangers’ Corey Seager who made the difference against Luis Ortiz. Here’s Joe Block.
Manager Derek Shelton says the outcome of the game shows how important every pitch is.
Shelton says it was a good outing by Ortiz, but you can’t make mistakes against Seager.
Jared Triolo blasted a three-run home run to get the Pirates back in the game. Shelton likes the way Triolo’s been working at the plate.
For tonight’s second game of the series, Mitch Keller [10-7, 3.95 ERA] gets the start for the Pirates. He is 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA in his three August starts. He gave up eight earned runs in five innings in his last start last Wednesday against the Padres. He faces Rangers’ left-hander Cody Bradford [4-0, 3.50 ERA] in seven appearances this season, including three starts this month. Bradford returned to the lineup late last month after being out since mid-April with a fractured rib. It’s a 7:40 airtime, 8:05 first pitch on WCCS.
Triolo will get a lot more time in the lineup with Ke’Bryan Hayes being placed on the 10-day injured list yesterday with lower back inflammation. It’s the second time this season that Hayes has been sat down by the injury, and it’s the fifth time in the last three seasons his aching back has landed him on the IL. Hayes is hitting only .233 this season with four home runs, and he’s batted only .196 this month.
Outfielder Billy McKinney was recalled from Indianapolis and played right field last night, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. He was batting.295 with five homers and 18 RBIs at Indy.
Right-handed reliever Hunter Stratton was also recalled from Indianapolis yesterday and Ryder Ryan was designated for assignment. Outfielder Joshua Palacios was optioned to Indy as his minor league rehab assignment ended.
