An Allegheny County man has been charged with leading police on a pursuit last May that reached speeds as high as 135 miles per hour on Route 22 from Derry Township into Indiana County.
28-year-old Nicholas D. Lomax of Duquesne was arraigned this week on a felony charge of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, misdemeanor recklessly endangering and disorderly conduct, and 47 summary traffic violations for the chase, which began shortly after 8 PM on May 19th when patrolling state troopers spotted his Audi A5 car, which had been reported as having fled from McKeesport police.
The troopers pursued the vehicle as it weaved its way through traffic, crossed over into oncoming traffic, and entered Indiana County, where nine vehicles were forced to swerve to avoid collisions. When the car turned onto Old William Penn Highway in Blairsville, police stopped chasing it for safety reasons.
Police filed the charges on June 8th, but Lomax evaded apprehension. Police caught him last weekend as they investigated an assault case from July in Wilmerding, Westmoreland County.
In the pursuit case, Lomax was ordered held at the Westmoreland County Prison with bond set at $100,000. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing before Judge Kelly Tua Hammers in Derry Township on January 5th.
