Demolition continues on several IUP buildings as part of the university’s long-range facilities master plan, however, the equipment inside those buildings is causing a stir among local residents.
One of them is Weyandt Hall, the former science hall on the north end of IUP’s campus, which shows several desks, cabinets, and picture frames inside the still-standing walls of the building. Several community members have voiced concerns on Facebook, asking why that equipment was left inside rather than recycled and donated to local schools or businesses. Some have speculated that specific language was added to the demolition contract, saying the company behind the razing of the dilapidated buildings owns the contents inside.
Others have said that the equipment is difficult to sell or donate, given its age and/or lack of value. As a result, it fell into company ownership as a way of offsetting the demolition costs.
We have reached out to IUP for comment and clarification. Once we hear back, we will pass it along to you.
