Returning from an off day, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin got his team back onto the practice field at St. Vincent College yesterday, joined by two invited sideline guests, Pirates manager Derek Shelton and GM Ben Cherington. Rocker Bret Michaels was also a guest on the sidelines.
The Steelers worked on transitions from one unit to another in advance of Friday’s preseason opener against Houston. Tomlin shuffled the lineup a little, because of injuries and a desire to get a closer look at some players, such as first round draft pick Troy Fautanu, who worked with the first team at right tackle.
The coach had a list of injuries after practice, the most prominent of which was linebacker Alex Highsmith, with a groin strain. Defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal left the practice field with an undisclosed problem. Linebacker Tyler Murray and defensive back Nathan Meadors also left the field, Murray with a groin strain and Meadors with a hamstring.
Tomlin says injuries are a part of football, and they may open doors for other players.
The coach is anxious to see his team in game action, and he says he wants them to be crisp and professional.
Quarterback Russell Wilson ramped up his activities, working in with the new offense more.
The Steelers are getting accustomed to new coordinator Arthur Smith’s offense, and they’re liking it. Veteran guard James Daniels says it’s a noticeable difference from previous OCs.
Tight end Pat Freiermuth is also a fan of the new offense, which uses tight ends as pass catchers much more.
A day after multiple reports claimed the Steelers were out of the trade market for the 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk, new reports say they are very much “in” on the star wide receiver. ESPN reports that the Patriots have dropped out of the running. CBS says the Steelers re-opened talks with the ‘Niners yesterday, and the Browns and Washington Commanders are also pursuing Aiyuk.
