She was born on May 15, 1931 in McIntyre. She was the first born of John and Olive (Hancock) Smith.
Betty grew up on her family farm with her brother Robert. Betty graduated from Elders Ridge High School and began working at the Dairy Dell in Indiana. She worked for various employers over the years, including, G.C. Murphy’s McCrory’s, Season-all, the Bonton, and finally the Bilo Bakery, where she retired at the age of 74. Betty loved working with the public and was affectionately known as “Betty Spaghetti”. She was an avid reader and enjoyed word searches and crossword puzzles to maintain her active mind. She loved music, especially Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, as well as many other country artists. She enjoyed watching classic westerns, like Gun Smoke and Bonaza as well as comedies. Betty took many day trips throughout Pennsylvania and a joining states. She loved writing letters to her many friends and family throughout the country and well known for her elegant handwriting. You always knew you would receive a thoughtful card or call from Betty to wish you a happy birthday. She especially enjoyed visits from her numerous grandchildren and was known as “GG”
She is survived by her children, Barbara Speranza, Indiana, David Speranza and wife Kathy, Clarksburg, Jeffrey Speranza, Shelocta, Sherri Morgan and husband Don, GA, Larry Moretti and wife Barbara, Indiana, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Feldrew Speranza, her second husband Lawrence “Lance” Moretti and a brother Robert.
In accordance with Betty’s wishes, there will be no visitation. The family will hold a remembrance service at a later date.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at St. Andrew’s Village as well as the IRMC staff for their attentive care during Betty’s final weeks.
