REA Energy has received a $1.5 million grant to upgrade its distribution system, thus decreasing the time needed to restore power during outages. The energy cooperative will use the funds for “smart grid” technology for the remote detection of outages involving about 9,000 REA members.
The funding comes through the 2026 Pennsylvania Grid Resilience Grants program. Grant recipients are required to add about 30 percent in cost shares. The program will award $10 million this year.
