Officials with Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe are in negotiations for a possible second airline to operate out of the facility.
Since 2011, low budget air travel provider Spirit has been the only company providing service at the Unity Township airport. Recently, the company announced it was cutting its service to Orlando next month. The company is also going through financial restructuring to come out of its second bankruptcy later this year. Westmoreland County Airport Authority Executive Director Gabe Monzo confirmed late last week that they are in talks with another airline to compliment Spirit’s presence. The company’s name and specifics on the discussion were not announced. Monzo said they hope to have things finalized in a few months.
Officials also say that the current terminal expansion project that is slated to wrap up this spring could be a good selling point in the negotiation process. The $22 million project is set to double its capacity to roughly 100,000 square feet, adding two gates, improved TSA areas and new amenities. The expansion is scheduled to open in June.
