It came down to the wire but the IUP women held on to win the PSAC championship yesterday, beating Gannon, 61-57 on Gannon’s own court, and it was the PSAC Athlete of the Year, Shae Weaver, who led the way.
Weaver scored 22 points and was 10-of-11 from the free throw line, including six in a row in the final 45 seconds. She also pulled down 13 rebounds as IUP won the conference championship for the seventh time. Teresa Maggio scored 18 points, all in the second half, and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. Marin Miller also scored in double figures, with 11 points.
Coach Craig Carey unleashed his offense in the second half, especially Weaver and Maggio.
Carey says he let Weaver and Maggio work the pick-and-roll over and over, putting the ball in the hands of his two best players.
IUP’s day was capped by the NCAA Division II Selection Show last night, and both the women and men will be playing in the Atlantic Regional. Here’s Jack Benedict with the story.
Carey says IUP has aspirations for the season and their next goal is to make it to the NCAA Elite Eight, but they’ll have to win a tough Atlantic Regional to do it.
The Women’s Atlantic Regional will be played Friday, Saturday, and Monday at the KCAC. The Men’s Regional will be played Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday at Gannon. All of the IUP games will be on 92.5 FM U92 starting with the women’s game Friday, airtime 4:30 and tipoff at 5.
