The Pirates outhit the Yankees yesterday, 10-5, but Bucs pitchers walked eleven batters in a 6-2 loss, their first defeat of spring training. Bubba Chandler started for the Pirates and threw only one-and-two-thirds innings, giving up no hits but walking four and giving up four earned runs while striking out two. Nick Gonzalez had two hits for the Pirates.
On Indiana In the Morning on WCCS yesterday, play-by-play man Greg Brown reflected on the passing of Bill Mazeroski, the Pirates Hall of Fame second baseman and 1960 World Series hero. He said Maz was a man of great character.
Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk reported yesterday that infielder Jack Branigan suffered a fractured nose and multiple injuries to the cartilage in his nasal complex when he was struck in the face by a bad-hop grounder in a game on Sunday. Tomczyk said Branigan will be further evaluated by local ear, nose, and throat specialists before determining a timeline for his return.
Promising relief pitcher Ryan Harbin has been shut down for six weeks by a teres major and lat injury. Non-roster invitee Oddanier Mosquedo is out with left forearm pain.
The Pirates play the Red Sox in Fort Myers today. Carmen Mlodzinski will start for the Bucs.
