The biggest Penguins hockey story of the day yesterday happened in Italy, where Sidney Crosby was knocked off the ice for Team Canada in their 4-3 overtime Winter Olympics win over Czechia. Crosby’s right knee folded underneath him when he was checked by defenseman Radko Gudas during the second period. He left the ice and was later taken to a hospital for an MRI to see what kind of damage was done.
Penguins coach Dan Muse was informed of the injury as he walked from the practice ice to meet the media. He had no idea of how badly Crosby was hurt, but he said he can’t begrudge players wanting to play in the Olympics, so he has to accept the risk.
Also at the Olympics, Team USA needed a game-winning overtime goal from Quinn Hughes to get by Sweden, 2-1. The Americans will play Slovakia in the semifinals on Friday.
The American and Canadian women’s teams meet for the gold medal today in Milan. Faceoff is scheduled at 1:10 PM (our time).
