After years of speculation on when it will happen, Waste Management has announced the closure of the landfill in Center Township.
The Evergreen Landfill site will close permanently on March 6th. The hauling facility off Route 119 in Center Township will continue to be utilized for a few months after trucks are moved to a new location as Waste Management will begin running routes out of their new Johnstown hauling site in March, according to officials with Waste Management. As far as jobs go, all employees have been offered employment at other Waste Management locations.
The initial announcement of the closure of the Evergreen landfill was made in June of 2023. The Central Indiana County Joint Sanitary Authority has taken the leachate discharge from the landfill. Those who use Waste Management as their garbage hauler will see no change in service.
We have reached out to Center Township Supervisors for comment on the situation and on the use of Evergreen Landfill coupons that allowed people to bring one load to the landfill at one-third the cost. They have not yet responded to our request.
