At Pirates Spring Training, Jhostynxon Garcia has been making waves as he wants to make the opening day roster with the team. Dubbed “The Password” by teammates and fans alike, he is looking to become a starting outfielder. He is ranked the 6th top prospect in the Pirates system and number 85 on the MLB Top 100. Experts say he’ll be able to provide a power bat the team has sorely missed.
Training camp officially starts Monday, with the first game of Spring Training next Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Bucs did have to deal with a coaching shakeup. Assistant Pitching Coach Thomas Whitsett resigned for personal reasons, and the team announced yesterday the promotion of Cibney Bello to the major-league staff to take his place. Bello, a 43-year-old Venezuelan native shared pitching coach duties with Drew Benes at Triple-A Indianapolis the past two seasons and also worked at their Dominican Republic academy in the offseason.
