FIGURE SKATING
At the Olympics yesterday, it was a shocker in the Men’s figure skating competition. The US’s “Quad God” Ilia Malinin fell short of the medal stand in figure skating, coming in eighth place. Malinin had the best score in the short program, but came in 15th in the free skate after falling twice during his routine. Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov took home the gold medal, while Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama and Shun Sato won silver and bronze.
ICE HOCKEY
The U.S. women’s hockey team tallied five goals in the second period of a 6-0 win over Italy in the Olympics Quarterfinal. Three of the goals were scored in a span of under four minutes, with Kendall Coyne lighting the lamp twice. Laila Edwards also had a goal. The U.S. is undefeated through fives games. They will play in the Semifinal on Monday.
The Team USA men’s hockey team will be back on the ice Saturday. The Americans will continue group play against Denmark. The Red, White and Blue opened the tournament with a 5-1 win over Lativa on Thursday behind a pair of goals from Brock Nelson.
Sidney Crosby had a goal in the third period of Team Canada’s 5-1 win over Switzerland in their second preliminary round game. They have the day off today and will play Sunday against France.
Sweeden lost to Finland 4-1. Penguins players Rickard Rakell and Erik Karlsson were held without a point. Sweeden plays Slovakia today.
CURLING
The Team USA women’s curling team beat Canada 9-8 in pool play. It is the first win for the Americans in eight all-time Olympic meetings against their neighbors to the north. The team is now 2-and-1 in pool play, tying with South Korea for third place so far in the Games. Team USA will be back in action Saturday against Japan. The US is seeking its first ever medal in the event.
SKIING
U.S. skiing legend Lindsey Vonn announced Friday that she will undergo a fourth surgery, which could lead to her return to the United States. The 41-year-old suffered a “complex tibia fracture” just 13 seconds into her run in the women’s downhill, her first event of the Winter Games. Vonn was racing on a ruptured ACL she sustained during a practice run late last month.
