Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson has introduced legislation to rename a post office in Mahaffey in honor of a military veteran and long-time letter carrier for the community.
The legislation would designate the facility as the “Robert Allen Bishop, Sr.” post office. He joined the Marines at the age of 22 and served for six years, completing an overseas tour of duty in Japan. When he returned to Pennsylvania, he co-owned and operated the Lightner and Bishop General Store which today is the home to the post office. Bishop also served the community as a letter carrier for 36 years in Mahaffey. He was awarded the Million Mile award which is given to letter carriers who drive a million miles or for 30 years with no preventable accidents. He also served as a member of the Mahaffey Fire Department and Ambulance. He died in June of 2023.
In a statement, Thompson said that renaming the post office would be a “testament to his selfless nature, and a leading example for generations to come.”
