State Senator Joe Pittman and some of his colleagues gave their support yesterday for the proposed consent decree for between the state Department of Environmental Protection and Keystone-Conemaugh Projects, LLC, better known as KeyCon.
The proposed consent decree announced in December would establish a schedule for the Keystone and Conemaugh generating stations to start installing and operating bottom ash system upgrades to both facilities to meet EPA guidelines for wastewater discharges. In his public testimony submitted to the DEP, Senator Pittman said approving the decree would “safeguard jobs and bolster grid stability, while also ensuring protection over our natural resources,” and would send a clear signal that the state is truly diversifying its energy portfolio.
The plants employ about 1000 workers and according to Pittman, sustain more in supply chains, and contribute nearly $5 million to the property tax rolls.
