As expected, the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby has been named captain of Team Canada at the Olympics. And former Penguins coach Mike Sullivan has named the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Mathews the captain of Team USA. Meanwhile, the Pens’ Erik Karlsson is an alternate captain for Team Sweden, and Rickard Rakell, who missed the Penguins’ game last Thursday at Buffalo with an injury suffered in morning skate, was on the ice playing right wing on Team Sweden’s third line yesterday. Crosby centered the third line for Team Canada during their practice.
The first Olympic hockey game involving Penguins players will be on Wednesday, the first day of hockey competition. Team Sweden, with Karlsson and Rakell, will play Italy at 3:25 PM.
Crosby will lead Team Canada against Czechia on Thursday at 10:40 AM. Team USA will play Latvia, with Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs, on Thursday at 3:10 PM.
