The first female justice to be elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court — Sandra Schultz Newman — has died.
Newman was 87 when she passed away Monday. Her cause of death was not disclosed. Newman was also the first female assistant district attorney for Montgomery County and the first woman named to the board of directors of the old Royal Bank of Pennsylvania. Some of her significant majority opinions while she was on the court included a ruling that protected wildlife areas from toxic acid mine drainage. Newman stepped down from the state Supreme Court when she reached mandatory retirement age in 2006.
