Thousands of revelers are expected to gather at Gobbler’s Knob on Monday as Punxsutawney Phil emerges for his 140th annual weather prediction.
Following a massive weekend storm that blanketed Jefferson County in over 15 inches of snow, borough crews have been working around the clock to clear public areas for the festivities. According to tradition, if the world-famous groundhog sees his shadow at sunrise—approximately 7:07 a.m.—he will predict six more weeks of winter; if not, an early spring is on the way.
While the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle maintains Phil’s forecasts are 100% accurate, meteorological data suggests the rodent has been right only about 39% of the time since 1887.
