Pennsylvania American Water Company is urging its customers to take care of their water pipes as the deep freeze in Indiana County continues.
As temperatures dip to -10 tonight and windchills down to -15, the utility company is reminding people that pipes in their home are their responsibility. People should know how to shut off their water, and test the main shut-off valve, check sprinkler or irrigation systems and eliminate sources of cold air near water lines. Any exposed pipes should be wrapped with insulation or heat tape.
When temperatures stay below freezing for extended periods, people should open the doors to cabinets or vanities hiding pipes to allow warm air in and keep a small trickle of water flowing.
If pipes freeze, shut off water immediately, and thaw frozen pipes by warming the air around it using a hair dryer, hot water or a space heater. Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn the water back on and check pipes and joints for any cracks or leaks.
