Steelers fans are steamed about the team hiring Mike McCarthy as their new head coach prompting owner Art Rooney II to respond on Steelers.com, ““We think we have a coach who is well-equipped to lead us into the next winning phase of Steelers football, and that’s what it’s all about. I think they’re going to love Coach Mike.”
The 62-year-old McCarthy is not just the oldest head coach ever hired by the Steelers, he is the oldest head coach they have ever had. Addressing the negative reaction, Rooney told the website “…social media really doesn’t enter into it. And none of that will matter once we’re starting to play games.
McCarthy is in the process of hiring his coaching staff and his choices for offensive coordinator are interesting, with some experts listing two former Pitt quarterbacks, Alex Van Pelt and Luke Getsy as options, and another intriguing name: former IUP quarterback Chase Haslett, the son of IUP Hall of Famer and former Steelers defensive coordinator Jim Haslett. Chase Haslett is the New Orleans Saints’ tight ends coach but he worked as an assistant under McCarthy for five years in Dallas.
