The Pirates have released slick-fielding infielder Alika Williams, who spent all of last season with Indianapolis, where he hit .268. Williams was acquired from Tampa Bay in 2023 for relief pitcher Robert Stephenson. In 83 games over two seasons with the Pirates, he hit a combined .203.
The Bucs yesterday announced number changes for their new acquisitions, and the official switch of a significant jersey number. Nick Gonzalez volunteered to give up Dave Parker’s old number 39 because he said no one else should wear that number in a Pirates uniform. He will wear number 3.
Jared Jones will switch from number 37 to 17 (former manager Derek Shelton’s old number); Endy Rodriguez switches from 5 to 13; newly-acquired Brandon Lowe will inherit number 5; Braxton Ashcraft gives up number 67 and will wear number 35; newcomer Ryan O’Hearn will wear number 29; Jake Mangum takes number 28; Jhostynxon Garcia, number 34; Gregory Soto, 31; Mason Montgomery, 46.
