Houston’s defense scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and the Texans handed the Steelers their seventh straight playoff loss, 30-6, last night to close out the AFC Wild Card Weekend.
Trailing 7-6 at the half and 10-6 entering the fourth quarter, the Steelers still had a chance, but the Texans’ Sheldon Rankin returned an Aaron Rodgers fumble 33 yards for a touchdown, and then safety Calen Bullock picked off a Rodgers pass and returned it 50 yards for another score. Woody Marks later tacked on the final touchdown on a 13-yard run to set the final score.
The Steelers’ only two scores were two field goals, covering 32 and 35 yards, by Chris Boswell.
A disappointed coach Mike Tomlin says it isn’t hard to see why the Steelers lost.
Tomlin says the Texans were just the better team.
Tomlin concludes his 19th season with his 7th straight playoff loss, dropping his record to 8-12 all-time in the postseason. He was not ready to talk about his or his team’s future just yet.
Rodgers was frustrated that the Steelers offense couldn’t find its stride.
The Texans had 408 total yards of offense versus the Steelers’ 175. Houston also converted 10 of 15 third downs compared to Pittsburgh’s 2 of 14. A disgusted TJ Watt says the defense has to be better than that.
A four-time NFL MVP, Rodgers said he would not make “an emotional decision” about retirement, although he said prior to the season that it would “very likely” be his last.
