Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is stepping away from the franchise after 19 seasons in Pittsburgh.
Tomlin informed players Tuesday, one day after the Steelers were eliminated from the playoffs with a 30-6 loss to Houston in the AFC wild-card round. The 53-year-old leaves with one of the most remarkable resumes in NFL history, never posting a losing season in nearly two decades. He won a Super Bowl, captured two conference championships, seven division titles, and finished tied for ninth all-time in regular-season wins. But Tomlin’s tenure also ends amid frustration, with Pittsburgh going nine straight seasons without a playoff victory and suffering six consecutive one-and-done postseason appearances. Because Tomlin resigned while still under contract, the Steelers retain his coaching rights and could seek compensation if he returns to the NFL before 2027.
Pittsburgh will now begin its search for just the fourth head coach in franchise history since 1969.
