Members of the state House and Senate return to Harrisburg this week. Both chambers are scheduled to meet on Tuesday for reorganization, the introduction of bills, or for re-consideration of previously-introduced bills. There will be committee meetings scheduled throughout the rest of the month, but the full legislature will not reconvene again in open session until January 26th.
House Speaker Joanna McClinton on Friday ordered two special elections for March, to fill seats vacated by Republican representatives. Both Torren Eckler and Lou Schmitt won elections in November to become judges of the Court of Common Pleas in their respective home counties, Eckler in Adams County and Schmitt in Blair County.
The rules governing special elections do not require primaries. The party committees in both legislative districts will select a candidate and the special election will be held March 17th, according to the writs of election signed by McClinton on Friday.
There are two other special elections scheduled for the state House, both of them for seats vacated by Democrats. They will be held February 24th in Lehigh and Allegheny counties.
