With the start of the New Year approaching, the state Department of Conservation & Natural Resources has announced that sixty “First-Day Hikes” will be held on Thursday at 49 state parks and three national forests.
Most of the guided hikes will be from one to two miles long, with some longer options depending on the terrain and location. The nearest site to Indiana County will be Prince Gallitzin State Park, which will have two hikes. The first is at 10 AM, embarking from the Beaver Valley Marina and going up and over the Gates Trail. The second hike will be around the shoreline of Glendale Lake, starting from the second car parking lot at the campground at 1 PM.
There are no “First Day Hikes” scheduled for Yellow Creek State Park, but the park and its trails are open 365 days a year from sunup to sundown.
