A winter storm watch issued in advance of today has been upgraded to an ice storm warning.
The National Weather Service advisory will start at 10:00 this morning and will remain in effect until 7 AM Saturday. Significant icing of two-to-three-tenths of an inch will be seen in Indiana, Jefferson, Armstrong and the upper elevations of Westmoreland County along with less than an inch of snow. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice formation and travel may be nearly impossible today.
PennDOT and the PA Turnpike Commission have announced that roads are being pre-treated where necessary ahead of today’s storm to prevent ice from forming a bond on the pavement, but icy spots could still form. Restrictions are planned for certain vehicles during the storm, and will be communicated via variable message boards, the 511PA traveler information website and smartphone apps. Check this story on our website for closures.
The National Weather Service says people should delay any travel if possible, but if you have to go out, allow extra time and extra space on the roadway, and drive with extreme caution. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns.
