The sale of the Penguins has been agreed to. It was announced on Friday by Fenway Sports Group and the Hoffman Family of Companies that the two sides have agreed to the sale to give Hoffman a controlling interest in the team. Fenway Sports Group will retain a minority stake for a period of time and will, according to a joint statement, “continue supporting key business areas, including sponsorship sales and regional sports network management, as part of a phased transition.”
There’s no word if former owner and Penguins legend Mario Lemieux was involved with the Hoffman Group. He and Ron Burkle bought the Pens out of Bankruptcy, and made a commitment to keep the team in Pittsburgh. The team was sold to Fenway Sports Group in 2021. Hoffman Family CEO Geoff Hoffman said they are committed to keep the Pens in Pittsburgh as well, as well as build the team and win Stanley Cups. The deal has yet to be approved by the NHL Board of Governors.
The Pittsburgh Penguins return to action for an away-and-home series against the Montreal Canadiens. Game one is tonight in Montreal, then the series moves to PPG Paints Arena for game two on Sunday night. You can hear the game at 6:00 PM on U-92.5 FM.
