The Pirates’ recent trade acquisition, outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, got off to a great start playing winter league baseball in Venezuela, but he’s out for the time being after injuring his quad Friday night. Garcia was 5-for-9 playing for Navegantes del Magallanes before he got hurt.
Incidentally, two of his teammates in Venezuela are former Pirates who left the major leagues in disgrace: Former closer Felipe Vasquez, who served a prison term for sexual misconduct before being deported by the U.S., and infielder Tucupita Marcano, who was banned for life by Major League Baseball after betting on baseball games.
MLB.com contributor Francys Romero reports the Pirates are one of the teams interested in trading for White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., who has had two poor seasons after making the American league All-Star team in 2023. Robert hit only .223 with 14 home runs and 53 RBIs last year, stealing 33 bases. He’s signed through the upcoming season at $20 million, with a team option for 2027 at $20 million or a $2 million buyout.
Romero says the Mets and Padres are also interested in Robert.
