WRITEUP PROVIDED BY HOMER-CENTER SWIM:
The Homer-Center Wildcats turned in a night of gritty races and big time drops Wednesday at IUP’s Jack A. Pidgeon Natatorium, as they faced the Marion Center Stingrays team in dual meet action. Marion Center took the team victories on both sides, winning the girls’ meet 114–47 and, with the absence of several key Homer-Center swimmers, just edged out the boys, 71–68, in a contest that came down to the final relay.
Despite the team scores, Homer-Center swimmers stacked up strong individual wins and major improvements, highlighted by standout performances from senior Morgan Nagy, juniors Brady Frazer, and Trevor Cameron, and freshman Blake Lucas.
Homer-Center opened the boys’ meet with a statement in the 200-yard medley relay, as the quartet of Lucas, Frazer, Chase Shoup, and Cameron took first. Senior captain Morgan Nagy once again anchored the girls’ squad, dominating the 200-yard freestyle and later claiming the 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman Maria Frazer backed her up with a runner-up finish in the 200 IM and a close second in the 100 freestyle.
In the distance events, junior Andrea Krvetsky battled through a tight race in the girls’ 500 freestyle, finishing second, while Lucas cruised to a commanding boys’ 500 freestyle win. On the sprint side, junior Joshalyn Patterson grabbed key points in the girls’ 50 freestyle with a second-place finish, and junior Peyton Strong chipped in points in both the 50 and 100 freestyle for the boys. Cameron continued his strong early-season form with a win in the 100 butterfly and another victory in the 100 backstroke, giving Homer-Center two more event titles on the boys’ side. The breaststroke closed out the individual events on a high note for the Wildcats. Nagy’s 100 breaststroke win led the girls, while Frazer powered to first in the boys’ 100 breaststroke, keeping Homer-Center within striking distance heading into the final relay.
There were several time drops during the meet. Joshalyn Patterson and Peyton Strong both dropped in their 50 freestyles. Carter Henry dropped over eight seconds in his 100-yard butterfly. Andrea Krevetsky had the biggest time drops of the meet with a nine-second drop in the 100 backstroke and an astonishing 13-second drop in the 500 freestyle.
While the scoreboard tilted toward Marion Center, Homer-Center’s narrow three-point loss in the boys’ meet, coupled with multiple event wins and relay breakthroughs, gives the Wildcats plenty of momentum heading into the training portion of their schedule. The Wildcats will look to build on Wednesday’s performances as they return to training.
