The Indiana County Tourist Bureau has commissioned a local artist for a project surrounding the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Mark Altrogge was selected by the Tourist Bureau to paint Indiana County’s “Liberty Bell” – a fiberglass replica of the original bell erected in Philadelphia. Each county in the state received a bell, and they will each be painted with things that represent that county.
Altrogge got his start painting still-life works when he was about 12-years-old, some of which he still has to this day. He received his undergraduate degree in Art Education and a Masters in Painting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His post-impressionist style of oil painting has been influenced by van Gogh, Monet, and Klimt. He had a sign painting business in Indiana, and also taught elementary art.
Altrogge says that it’s an honor to be selected, as he knows of many local artists who are very skilled.
The bell will be put on display at the Veteran’s Memorial next to the Jimmy Stewart Museum on December 13th.
