Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington used to be the GM of the Boston Red Sox, and he’s developed a trading partnership of sorts with his old team. Yesterday, Cherington engineered a five-player swap, sending starting pitcher Johan Oviedo to Boston along with Altoona Curve pitcher Tyler Sanamiego and 2025 fifth round draft choice, catcher Adonys Guzman, for the Red Sox’ number three prospect, outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and right-handed minor league pitcher Jesus Travieso.
Garcia, whose nickname is “The Password” (because his first name looks like one), hit 21 home runs and drove in 75 runs at the Double-A and Triple-A levels last season. He made his Major League debut on August 22 and played five games with the Bosox, going 1-for-7 at the plate.
Baseball America rates Garcia the number 76 prospect in minor league baseball and MLB.com has him at number 85.
