With the first major snow of the season, roads may be slick and several agencies are advising people to be careful if they have to drive today.
State police say that people should check their lights, fluid levels, tire tread and battery condition, carry some extra windshield washer fluid, and to carry an emergency kit with some additional gear for the winter like blankets, jumper cables, shovel, scraper, hat, gloves and other items. Troopers also say that you should not rely on your vehicle’s automatic headlamps in snow, rain, or foggy conditions. Be sure to manually turn on your vehicle’s headlamps when prudent and when required by the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code.
They also remind everyone to drive at an appropriate speed for the road conditions.
PennDOT crews have been actively pre-treating roads where they can ahead of the storm and crews are currently working on making sure streets are passible. The department also advises caution when going over a bridge or up a highway ramp where ice can form quicker than it can on the road.
