On Tuesday night, Indiana Borough Council approved the 2026 budget, which holds the line on property taxes for borough residents.
The budget balances at $6.6 million for the general fund, with property taxes at 7.6 mills. The decision came after a lengthy discussion on whether to remain on course for the Indiana County Municipal Emergency Services Authority or to make a private deal with Citizen’s Ambulance. The council voted 5-2 to not move forward with an agreement with Citizen’s, but do have the ability to opt-out of the ICMESA after the public meeting on December 17th. The decision means that there were no adjustments to the tax code that was approved in November.
Council also approved a request for proposals concerning changing the traffic light patterns on Philadelphia Street changing traffic light patterns at downtown intersections to make them all red for pedestrian crossings. Borough Manager Nicole Sipos said that another part of the pedestrian plan, which would have eliminated left turns from Oakland Avenue/9Th Street onto westbound Philadelphia Street is being delayed.
There is no exact date for when the project will get underway, but the borough staff will continue to update the public on its progress at every public meeting.
