The Pirates had until 6 PM yesterday to protect eligible players from the December 10th Rule 5 Draft, and they added Altoona star outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez and five other prospects to the 40-man roster while dropping several others.
Valdez, infielder Jack Brannigan, starting pitchers Wilber Dotel and Antwone Kelly, and relievers Brandon Bidois and Tyler Sanamiego were all added to the big league roster.
To open space on the 40-man, pitchers Colin Holderman, Dauri Moreta, and outfielders Alexander Canario and Ronny Simon were all designated for assignment, and infielder Cam Devanney was released with the understanding that he will sign with the Hanshin Tigers of the Nippon Professional League.
