Pennsylvania’s new state budget boosts education funding by $900 million but cuts payments to cyber charter schools by an estimated $175 million, redirecting the money to traditional public districts, officials said.
Gov. Josh Shapiro defended the change, saying districts have been overpaying cyber charters and that the cuts won’t affect education quality.
But Marcus Hite, who leads the Pennsylvania Association of Public Cyber Charter Schools, warned the reduction could force staff cuts or even closures at smaller cyber schools, leaving families with fewer options.
