The IUP men’s basketball team began their season with wins over Concorde and Lincoln on Friday and Saturday. And with their crushing 70-32 win over Virginia State yesterday, coach Craig Carey’s IUP women are also 2-0.
IUP opened the game with a 25-4 first quarter, working the inside against an overwhelmed Virginia State. Ny’Shae Weaver scored 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting, and added nine rebounds for the Crimson Hawks, who shot a sizzling 48 percent from the field. IUP scored 14 points off turnovers and played stifling defense, especially around the perimeter, where they held Virginia State to an 0-for-14 performance beyond the three-point line.
The Crimson Hawks play twice this week at the KCAC. The home opener Wednesday will be against Ashland, which was ranked number six in the nation in the preseason and went 1-1 over the weekend, losing on Saturday, 81-77, to Wayne State. Ashland will be looking for its all-time 1,000th win at IUP on Wednesday.
IUP will also play on Friday at the KCAC, in the Education Day game against Chatham at 11 AM.
