The tree that will stand in IRMC Park for the holiday season will be delivered today.
Instead of coming from a tree farm in Indiana County, the tree will come from just behind Waller Hall just off the Oak Grove on IUP’s Campus. Allegheny Arboretum at IUP Board of Directors Co-Chair Dr. Michael Tyree helped identify the tree to be provided for the holiday season. Indiana County Tourism Board and Christmas Tree Growers Association president Gregg Van Horn said this will be the first and last blue spruce that will be featured at IRMC Park as it is rare to find one so big and in such good condition. This is part of the university’s 150th Anniversary celebration. IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll said providing the tree is a way to recognize the important role the community played in IUP’s history.
The tree is expected to make its way through town in the 9:00 hour this morning. As the tree will be delivered today, North 7th Street between Philadelphia and Nixon Avenue will be blocked off for the holiday season. Decoration of the tree will take place throughout the week with tree lighting ceremonies taking place at 6:30 as part of the It’s A Wonderful Life Festival kickoff Friday night beginning at 5:00 PM at IRMC Park. The annual Holiday Parade will begin at 7:00 PM. We’ll have coverage of both the tree-lighting and parade on Renda Digital TV and our Facebook pages.
