Work is underway to restore the Kintersburg Covered Bridge in Marion Center.
The bridge was originally built in 1877 by J.S. Fleming and was named in honor of John Kinter, a revolutionary war veteran. It is one of four Howe Truss bridges remaining in Pennsylvania, which uses metal vertical tension rods and diagonal timber compression members. The bridge is one of four that is under the care of the Indiana County Parks and Trails office, and it is being disassembled for a refurbishment project. Funding for the bridge was secured through PennDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Grant program.
The $807,314 project is being done by Horizon Construction Group and Lancaster County Timber Frames, with Gibson Thomas Engineering serving as the project engineer. Crews will repair and replace any defective components and reassemble the bridge. The project is expected to wrap up in 2026, in time for its 149th anniversary.
