As IUP plays Kutztown for the PSAC Championship, Renda Media’s longtime voice of the Crimson Hawks, Jack Benedict, will broadcast his 600th career game.
Jack has been the voice of the Crimson Hawks football team for 57 seasons. Benedict has been a constant presence with both IUP Football and Basketball teams over the years, and on Indiana in the Morning on Friday, he said that he has been lucky in the 600 football games to call a lot of winning campaigns.
Benedict’s career in broadcasting started on September 20th, of 1968 with IUP’s game against Northwood University. That season was capped by an appearance at the first-ever Boardwalk Bowl. The next year, Benedict joined WDAD as morning show host and sports director. In 1989, he moved to WCCS when the station secured the rights to IUP’s sports.
He will be honored by the IUP football team this weekend as their helmets will carry a special “JB 600” sticker.
