Some Uniontown residents are upset over the possible construction of a new Dollar General store right next to a historical home.
Trees are now cleared on a section of land along Morgantown Street, near the Craig Mansion and Benjamin Franklin Elementary-Middle School. The Craig Mansion was built in the 1870’s by Robert Craig, a descendant of John Smilie, who settled in the area before the Revolutionary War. The house is on a separate property and will not be disturbed by the construction, but those opposed to the store say placing it near the mansion will take away from the impact of the area.
Uniontown Solicitor Tim Witt says a development plan for the site has been approved.
A spokesperson with Dollar General has told KDKA-TV they have not committed to building the new store, but they are in the “due diligence phase” of the process. That is essentially the same thing a company representative told TribLive about the project in early 2022.
